On October 11, 1987, Jaime Pardo Leal was assassinated in the municipality of La Mesa, Cundinamarca. And of the assassinations committed by drug trafficking in the 1980s, it is the one that resonates the most in 2022, after that of Luis Carlos Galán. Both were leaders of their own parties and from their stands they made complaints against what was called at that time dark forces. That they were actually alliances between the military and drug traffickers to exterminate all traces of political dissidence and denunciation of what was happening in the country. In the 1980s, drug trafficking ruled and in reality very few denounced what was happening in political matters. Some for fear of being killed and others, as always, for the comfort of continuing in the honey of power and money.

Jaime Pardo Leal was one of those few who dared to denounce what happened in a time when Pablo Escobar He stepped proudly on the sacred precinct of the national capitol. Pardo Leal had passed through the ranks of the student movements of the 70s and even became part of the Colombian Communist Party, which a few years ago was like being part of a satanic sect from Mataniños. This journey led him to be part of the leadership of the Patriotic Union that was created after the La Uribe peace accords between the government of Belisario Betancur and the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces Farc-EP. In 1986 he was a candidate for the presidency for La Unión Patriotica, where he obtained the largest vote for a leftist movement in the country up to then.

Today, when a leftist leader runs the country for the first time, we can say that the death of Pardo Leal, as well as the death of so many other leaders in the country, was not in vain. And that the more than three hundred thousand votes he had at the time became, thirty years later, eleven million people who received the flags of the Patriotic Union to claim and fulfill the dreams of transformation of this political leader.
